Antoni Gaudí in León: A Magical Route from Casa Salomé

Antoni Gaudí in León: A Magical Route from Casa Salomé

Did you know that you don't need to go to Barcelona to be left speechless by Antoni Gaudí’s architecture?

Two marvelous examples of the Catalan genius's Modernism are hidden right here in the Kingdom of León. Staying at Casa Rural Salomé places you right at the heart of this "triangle of art and stone."

1. The Gaudí Palace in Astorga: A Fairytale Castle

Famous landmark Astorga Epsiscopal Palace, in Astorga, Leon, Spain.

Just a few miles from our doorstep stands the Episcopal Palace of Astorga. It is one of the very few works by Gaudí outside of Catalonia, and it looks like something straight out of a medieval legend.

  • Don't miss: Its cylindrical towers, the surrounding moat, and the three zinc angels guarding the garden.
  • Fun Fact: Gaudí resigned from the project before its completion due to disagreements with the council, but his essence remains etched into every block of gray granite.

2. Casa Botines: The "Castle" of the Capital

Leon, Spain, July 2016: Tourist visiting Botines Palace and Guzmanes Palace in Leon was built by famous spanish architect Antoni Gaudi

If you head into León city, you will find the Casa Botines Museum. Originally built as a warehouse and private residence, it is now a temple dedicated to the architect’s legacy.

LEON, SPAIN - MAR 23, 2015: Bronze statue of Antonio Gaudi in Leon by José Luis Fernández, his work Against House Treads, is the only building designed and built by Gaudí in the city of León.

  • The "Must-Have" Photo: Sitting on the bench next to the bronze statue of Gaudí that rests in front of the façade.
  • The Secret: During a restoration, a lead tube was found hidden beneath the statue of Saint George, containing the original plans signed by Gaudí himself.
